The career of French pianist Richard Clayderman has not only enriched the lives of millions but makes fascinating reading, too. Since 'Ballade Pour Adeline’, which sold 22 million copies and set him on the path to superstardom, he has released more than 800 titles and received 263 gold and 63 platinum discs. A 1987 debut concert appearance in China was screened on AsiaVision to an audience of over 800 million, while the subsequent decade and a half has seen many more pages added to his unique success story. But it’s musical riches that have proved the key – and the boy born Philippe Pages in Paris in 1953 was already a keen pianist at the tender age of six. That’s not surprising, really, since his father was a music teacher and his grandfather gave him his first piano. Who knows what grand’pere said, though, when, after studying at the Paris Conservatoire of Music, the boy rebelled and decided he wanted to become a rock star? He worked as a backing musician with the likes of Johnny Halliday and Michel Sardou, but was not destined to remain in their shadow for long The turning point came in 1976 when Richard met Delphine record-label owners Olivier Toussaint and Paul De Senneville. The latter had written 'Ballade Pour Adeline' for his daughter, and the lilting instrumental would soon become a Clayderman theme tune. His combination of popular classics and classic pop, embellished by those trademark strings (often arranged by Toussaint), has proved timeless and ensured his army of fans has kept on growing. In Britain, he has – at last count – registered 14 chart albums, a list that started in 1982 with an eponymous effort that reached Number 2 and includes collaborations with James Last and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Neither has he been afraid to ring the stylistic changes: musical tributes to the Carpenters and Andrew Lloyd Webber and a combination of standards from Hollywood and Broadway have all proved best-sellers, and are sampled here. He works hard, making some 200 concert appearances a year to maintain his worldwide profile, but when not touring or recording he likes to relax at his home in Antibes, near Nice, on the French Riviera. Clayderman is a vegetarian who neither smokes nor drinks alcohol; spending two hours a day at the keyboard to ensure his skills are kept in tip-top condition. So don’t be fooled by the easy-listening tag: making music this good takes dedication! Fans know Richard Clayderman as ‘The Prince of Romance’ after the compliment paid by First Lady Nancy Reagan when he played for her at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York. You may not be well-heeled enough to afford a command performance from the faultless Frenchman – but this album is surely the next best thing… 1. For All We Know / We’ve Only Just Begun A medley of two Carpenters hits, both favourites at wedding ceremonies the world over, opens our compilation in sunnily optimistic style. 2. Phantom Of The Opera This stirring Andrew Lloyd Webber show theme was originally performed by Sarah Brightman, the second Mrs Lloyd Webber, and Steve Harley. 3. Memory Another Lloyd Webber standard, this time from Cats, the longest-running production in Broadway history. 4. How Deep Is Your Love Robin, Barry and Maurice Gibb are among the pop era’s greatest songwriters, and this US Number 1 from 1977 is one of the Bee Gees’ most memorable creations. 5. Hello Lionel Richie, no mean keyboardist himself, created a soulful classic in this, his fourth chart-topper since leaving the Commodores. 6. The Way We Were Most often associated with Barbra Streisand, thanks to the motion picture, this beautiful ballad takes on new life in Clayderman’s hands. 7. Ballade Pour Adeline The tune that started it all for Richard over two decades ago still retains its innocent charm. 8. And I Love You So The late Perry Como took this Don McLean composition to the charts, and Richard’s interpretation respects the memory. 9. As Time Goes By Casablanca’s music which gained the 1942 film an Oscar nomination was as memorable as the dialogue – nothing more so than ‘As Time Goes By’. 10. Shadow Of Your Smile Richard tackled this song on his 1984 Top 30 album ‘The Music Of Love’, outshining Engelbert, Tony Bennett and other interpreters. 11. Blue Eyes Another ‘Music Of Love’ highlight saw one of Elton John’s finest melodies given a new Gallic dimension. 12. Yesterday Even Paul McCartney’s most covered song gains new character when performed a la Français. But sorry, ‘Hier’ just doesn’t scan! 13. Only You Third time lucky as Richard adds his trademark to a song written by Vince Clarke that was a hit for Yazoo and then the Flying Pickets in the ‘80s. 14. Night & Day Cole Porter’s classic has entranced singers from Sinatra to Fitzgerald, but this instrumental treatment speaks volumes. 15. Smoke Gets In Your Eyes A golden page from the Jerome Kern songbook, this was a highlight of 1986’s ‘Hollywood And Broadway’ album from Clayderman. 16. Stardust Bing Crosby, Willie Nelson and, most famously, Nat King Cole have all made this Hoagy Carmichael song their own. Now it’s Richard’s turn… 17. The Way You Look Tonight Another Kern classic, a chart-topper for Fred Astaire in 1936 and yet another ‘Hollywood And Broadway’ highlight. 18. On The Street Where You Live My Fair Lady, staged in 1956 and filmed eight years later, was studded with classics from Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe: this is just one. 19. Don’t Cry For Me Argentina Richard’s third Lloyd Webber selection is the unforgettable theme song from Evita: need more be said? 20. Do You Know Where You’re Going To? A 1976 US chart-topper for Diana Ross, this magnificent Michael Masser-Gerry Goffin composition was featured in the movie Mahogany. 21. Tara’s Theme (Gone With The Wind) Max Steiner’s magnificent theme for the 1939 film Gone With The Wind evokes memories of Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh and an all-star cast. 22. Somewhere Over The Rainbow Beloved of singers from Judy Garland (the original Dorothy in Wizard Of Oz) to Eva Cassidy, this comes up fresh and new in Richard’s hands. 23. Close To You This Burt Bacharach/Hal David classic originally recorded by Dionne Warwick was a million-seller for the Carpenters in 1970. 24. Yesterday Once More Another Carpenters classic to close our album. This original composition titled a collection of rock’n’roll oldies in 1974. |
